What We Do
The Division of Pediatric Surgery in The Department of Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center offers specialized surgical services for newborns, children, and adolescents.
Surgeons with special competence in pediatric surgery perform state-of-the-art procedures on all organ systems, including gastric and abdominal, orthopedic, thoracic, urological, gynecological, and neurosurgical.
Pediatric surgeons also work closely with women undergoing high risk pregnancies to manage surgical treatments for newborns with a variety of congenital anomalies.
Patients in need of emergency surgical care are initially assessed by a board-certified pediatric attending physician at the medical center’s dedicated Pediatric Emergency Room.
Pediatric surgical patients benefit from a full range of support services at The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center, a state-designated children’s hospital. Support services include: pediatric gastroenterology, endocrinology, pulmonology, and infectious diseases.
Physicians and staff understand the emotional component associated with the surgical treatment of their young patients and make every effort to provide advanced care with compassion.
To alleviate children’s fears prior to the surgical experience, the medical center encourages participation in a special introductory tour designed to familiarize the patient and family with the hospital environment and the people who will be involved in the child’s healthcare. The tour provides the child with valuable first hand knowledge on what to expect on the day of surgery and throughout his or her hospital stay.
Tours are arranged according to the special needs of each child. They are held in small groups, or on a one-on-one basis.
In addition, one parent or guardian is encouraged to accompany the child to surgery and remain in the operating room until the child is anesthetized.
The Division of Pediatric Surgery serves as a referral center for western New Jersey, central New Jersey, and New York State.
